GROWN is out !!!
I think I held onto this album for so long because I was convinced it was the project that could change my life. The music came quick, but figuring out how to release it inna way that felt good has taken years… Years, because I’ve had to decolonize my mind on so many fronts due to this music industry shit. Simply put, I finally reached a point where I feel soo good about just letting things be exactly where they’re at.
That gets reflected through the album too, I believe. There’s this natural, as-is essence that doesn’t overcomplicate the experience. Acoustic, simple, open, and honest. There’s no agenda. I first started writing songs on the guitar when I was a teenager, so coming back to that felt like coming into contact with fragmented parts of myself that needed to return home. I collaged sonic moments from old family VHS tapes, with field recordings of the ocean in the Philippines, creating these pockets where nostalgia meets bliss . . . however fleeting.
Heart is the resource. I’ve had to confront some resistance with the project finding its place in today’s landscape. This music is hardly “where I’m at now”, nor does it speak to what’s currently happening in the world, so why release it now, or even at all? How we release music is as much political as it is spiritual. I’ve come to understand that rather than trying mythologize the hyperbolic “album drop” moment, it’s more like “whoa, the garden looks so different this morning. oh look, all these flowers bloomed overnight!” type beat. It doesn’t beg to be noticed. It holds beauty simply because it exists . . . It was GROWN.
